Seductress. Prostitute. Outcast. Adulterer. Pregnant Unwed Teen. Who would highlight that kind of ancestry?

Jesus would.

The only person who ever got to choose His family doesn’t hide the messes. He highlights them for all to see. He unashamedly says they’re His.

The Gospel of Matthew begins with Jesus’s family tree, an unusual one not only because it includes women, but messy women: Tamar, who tricked her father-in-law to impregnate her; Rahab, the Jericho prostitute who betrayed her countrymen; Ruth, the widowed Moabitess turned beggar; and Bathsheba, listed only by her murdered husband’s name. Then there was Mary. Although we know of her innocence and submission to God, those around her questioned her purity and the legitimacy of the Child she bore.

Join Susan Tyner in examining how God wove the messy stories of these five women together into His Big Story of salvation. And learn how He continues to redeem His children—one messy story at a time.

Each book comes with a Big Picture of the Bible timeline for reference in the study.

You can purchase your print copy at the PCA Bookstore. There is a bulk discount so buy for a group, save the shipping, and have a porch pick up. Currently, the books are available for pre-order and should be ready to ship to have in time for the release of the first video in June.

They will be available through 2023.

The teaching videos will be 30 minutes long.

Yes! We invite you to do the study in the summer, fall, or even next spring!

YES and YES! You can do it with women in your church, neighborhood or far away friends. I heard about a group of MTW missionaries who plan to study together and I loved the story of a grandmother who is doing it with her daughter and granddaughter. We have provided helpful tips and discussion questions. You could meet virtually or, Lord willing, in person. You could also do it individually at your own pace.

No! We’d love to have as many join as possible! Last summer we had over 2,400 join the Hinged Bible Study.

On this website, you will see links to weekly teaching videos. A new video was released each week for 8 weeks in June/July. You can watch them anytime you like from the website.

Susan Tyner serves as Women’s Ministry Coordinator at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Fort Worth, Texas. She is author of What’s SHE Doing Here? and a regular contributor for the enCourage blog and podcast, as well as one of the contributing authors of the Hinged Bible study. Susan enjoys speaking at conferences and retreats, but also enjoys a lazy Saturday cooking a big pot a gumbo. Susan and her husband, Lee, have five children, and an almost empty nest. For more information, go to Susan’s website at susantyner.com

If you are gathering as a group, it would be good to give everyone her copy of the book ahead of time. It works best to interact 3 times with the material: first in reading and answering questions, second in listening to/watching the videos, and third in discussing the small group questions.

Chapter 1 – The Not So Fabulous Five (Matt. 1:1-17; Phil. 2:6-7)

Chapter 2 – God’s Story (Gen. 1-3; Rev. 21)

Chapter 3 – The Desperate Daughter-in-Law (Gen. 38)

Chapter 4 – The Career Prostitute (Joshua 2)

Chapter 5 – The Ultimate Outsider (The Book of Ruth)

Chapter 6 – From Outsider to Ultimate Insider (The Book of Ruth)

Chapter 7 – The Queen of Messy (2 Sam. 11 & 12)

Chapter 8 – The Unwed Teenage Mother (Luke 1:1-38)

Chapter 9 – Magnificat! (Luke 1:46-55)

Each chapter of this study is broken into three sections: Her Story, God’s Story, and Your Story. The study is written for women who want to open their Bibles yet cannot spend hours each week on a Bible study. Working through each chapter should take no longer than two hours per week, including the video lesson or podcast. You may take just a few minutes each day to work through one section of a chapter, or you may take on all three sections in one sitting. It is up to you!

From Susan Tyner: I’m so glad your group is made up of both new and experienced Bible students! This study “homework” takes less time than many studies. I tried to keep it brief for those who have time challenges yet need to get to the way God’s Word impacts their life in that time. I’d guess that a woman could sit down, read a chapter and answer the questions in about an hour sitting or spread it over three days for 20 minutes each–maybe less depending on her previous knowledge of the Bible.

If you still have a question, email Kathy Wargo, kwargo@pcanet.org or call 678-825-1132.

Endorsements

The opening pages of Matthew’s gospel loudly proclaim that Jesus came to save the lost, the messy, and the broken. If that news is as good for you as it is for me, then this Bible study is for you. Susan Tyner shows us how God not only wove His story of salvation together with a prostitute, a foreigner, a teen mom, and other “messy women,” she shows us how He is also weaving your story and mine into His today. What a glorious Savior we have!
