Cultivating Corporate Prayer in Women’s Bible Study

Christ Community Presbyterian Church in Lakeland, FL, has a regular practice of using prayer cards. In Bible study, everyone gets a prayer card (blank index card) that they’re invited to fill out the first week and use as a prayer tool every week at Bible study. The small group leaders pick these up each week and return them to the leader so that they’re available to use each week. On the Bible Study prayer cards, we ask women to write 3 requests: one regarding their hearts, one regarding their work (employment, volunteer, home, or otherwise), and one “stretch” request… an area of hopelessness or weariness in prayer. We use these cards for prayer each week, then women are invited to share “prayer stories” at the end of each Bible study semester. We use prayer cards in community group, as well.

Our women are growing in their comfort with public praying (corporate prayer). We periodically give an opportunity to challenge our women with this by praying for a specific local ministry and using “popcorn” prayers in the large Bible study group. Some women pray out loud, others stay quiet, but many women have expressed growth in that area.

Our Women’s Ministry Leadership Team read A Praying Church (Paul Miller) together 2 years ago for our monthly “training” piece. We read 1-2 chapters and discussed them at every leadership team meeting as our church was praying to become a church that did life through prayer. Many of the women and men at CCPC have read through A Praying Life by Paul Miller, participated in a prayer cohort with SeeJesus, or attended A Praying Life Conference over the years, and God has been faithful to grow the ministry of prayer at our church.
